Abstract:International industrial espionage is costing Americans $300 billion a year. It is crucial for all companies to have an anti-espionage program. In this article the authors have proposed a five-step damage control strategy. These steps are: precautionary measures, sensitivity assessment, contingency plans, detection, and disaster control. As the authors move from the first step to the fifth, the risk and cost factor becomes more intensified. The firm should be in a position to determine what stage of global damage control strategy is in effect at any given time. Two points in dealing with international espionage stand out. First, the firm has to establish certain parameters to prevent itself from going overboard. Second, the firm must be able to establish the value of overall espionage protection as opposed to its research and development activities.
