Abstract:The focus of the study is on the leadership structure at the very top of a firm. It is specifically examined how the presence of a COO/president (separate from the chief executive officer or CEO - hereafter as: COO-pres.) affects strategic change (here as: str-chg.) and CEO dismissal (as: CEO-dis). Based on longitudinal data on the tenures of 207 CEOs, it is found that the COO-pres. increases the magnitude of str-chg. under conditions of low firm performance (as: perf). However, it decreases the magnitude of str-chg. under conditions of high perf. In addition, the presence of a COO-pres. increases the likelihood of CEO-dis. under conditions of low perf., and this effect is stronger when the magnitude of str-chg. is high. However, it has no impact on the likelihood of CEO-dis. under conditions of high perf. These results suggest that the impact of the COO-pres. on str-chg. and CEO-dis. varies across different organizational contexts.
