Abstract:This article elucidates the debate about the financial performance of socially responsible investment (SRI) mutual funds through separately analyzing the contributions of before-fee performance and fees to SRI funds' performance, and by exploring the role played by fund management companies in the defining those variables.
Using the matching estimator methodology, it is found among other results that in the period from 1997 to 2005, the U.S. SRI funds had better before- and after-fee performance than conventional funds with similar characteristics. However, the differences are driven exclusively by SRI funds run by management companies specialized in SRI etc.
