Abstract: | Adam Smith's "Theory of Modern Sentiments" makes a difference between actual impartial spectator and the ideal. The article claims that Smith is able to extent the theory of moral approbation to judge the actions and motives of the agent itself. Smith's bias in favour of commercial society over the early rude state, therefore, has its roots in his moral philosophy. |
