Abstract:Meaning is embedded in every strategy and statement within the organization. Effective personnel management exemplifies successful communications. The process involves not only facts and information, but also belief systems, attitudes and prejudices. At the same time people in organizations use meanings for explanation and command. Interpreting meaning then, as revealed in action and interaction, is a crucial dimension in the personnel manager's role. Some words in everyday management currency, such as "effectiveness" or "success" are more valued statements than concrete, universally understood terms. Some elements of meaning are identified. The concept of negotiated meaning is discussed.
