Abstract:Difficulties encountered by African countries in the field of social security are described. The strong points and shortcomings in existing schemes are presented. The principal questions covered are the extension of social protection to non-wage earners, health care, the situation concerning provident funds, administration and financing. As a dynamic institution, social security has aroused growing interest on the part of governments and governed alike, but its extension is threatened by the economic depression to which most of the African countries, at least those south of the Sahara, appear to be doomed.
