Abstract: | Traditionally, one of the most important productivity problems in R and D is stimulating communication among researchers. This problem becomes more difficult when laboratories are located far from each other. The practices of fourteen large multinational companies are reported in order to get some insight into how they manage this communication problem. The activities of the laboratories ranged widely, from basic research to applied development. Several prominent elements are discussed in detail: organizational structure' "boundary-spanning" individuals or "gatekeepers"; communications technology such as fax machines, teleconferencing, videoconferencing. Rules and procedures enhancing communication are identified. |
