Abstract:The concept of horizontal management broadens the concept of the service economy by treating employees and departments within firms as customers of each other. To implement horizontal management, it is first necessary to identify exactly what activities, products, or services are provided to others. It is shown how to analyze relationships between internal suppliers and internal customers. The example of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company is presented as an illustration. The benefits of horizontal information flow - as opposed to the more traditional vertical model - are elucidated. The tools of involving employees are described. The role of identification meetings is highlighted. It is shown how standards of performance are developed.
