Abstract:Small, private companies may out not want, nor need, the kind of sophisticated information systems which large organizations now have. But they court disaster if they rely on entrepreneurial intuition alone. A simple, five-component information system is proposed as the essential minimum. As the pharmacy business demonstrates, financial, productivity, marketplace, people and trends information can be the basis for actions that improve private company performance. Moreover, the systems, competences and employee attitudes to institute an information power program do not require the deep resources available only to large scale companies.
