Abstract:In 1995 the men's suit market was worth 552 mn pounds at retail prices. ready-made suits accounted for 90 percent of this and bespoke or made-to-measure suits for the rest. In the 1990s sales have been in steep decline. In a recession women's clothing continues to sell but at lower unit prices. However, men's wear sales - particularly of suits - slow down. British men easily convince themselves that their present suit can always last another six months or more - ands may take a perverse pride in doing so.
