Abstract:Less than a decade ago Courtaulds summed up much that's wrong with UK industry. The group has been a complete cycle: thunderous rejuvenation, after long slumber, in the 1960s, recession and massive retrenchment in the 1970s; and finally re-emergence in the 1980s as a slimmed down, vastly more efficient business, pursuing less grand ambitions - but a far more durable management style. By aiming at high added value and listening to the market, the firm has become a symbol of power of survival.
