Abstract:By most criteria the arts comprise a significant area of economic activity. The aim of the present article is to consider how far economics has gone over the last thirty years, or how far it might go, in exposing and analyzing the peculiar problems posed by production and consumption of the arts. The author looks at the role of tastes as a fundamental driving force in the demand for and supply of art.
