Abstract:This paper reviews and interprets from an econometric perspective the demographic trends in the U.S. since the turn of the century. The primary focus is upon the interplay between the fertility and labour force participation of women and how they may be interpreted within simple economic models. In the short run labour force participation rates determine the labour force but over a period of twenty-five years changes in current fertility can begin to have an impact upon the labour force.
