Abstract:The sympathies and affections of most people are entangled in a web of family relationships. To economists, who are accustomed to modeling society as a set of interactions among self-interested individuals, this fact has often been an embarrassing nuisance. This paper instead of reviewing economists' past achievements in the economics of the family, will focus on work that is less familiar to those who normally work in this area, but which has great potential to enrich our understanding of economic relations within families.
