Abstract:The results of studies from the USA, Canada, Britain and Australia are compared with each other. It is not possible to attach every factor that affects the differences in wages. The empirical evidences provide some guide for the differences: (1) some of the differences in wages reflect discrimination in the labor market; (2) occupational segregation accounts for more of the earnings gap than does discriminatory pay differentials within the same job: (3) because differences in pay across establishments and industries account for a substantial portion of the gap this restricts the scope of policies like equal pay: (4) a great portion of the earnings gap reflects decisions outside the labor market.
