Abstract:The article investigates the efficiency and user acceptance of computers with handwriting recognition across a variety of potential applications: word processing, spreadsheets, disk management and graphics. The pen-based interface was tested on users with a wide range of experience to find the kind of users who were most likely to adopt it. The results show that all the users worked faster on the keyboard than the pen-based interface. The authors conclude that handwriting recognition will never become widely used as a direct substitute for the keyboard for general-purpose computing. It may find acceptance in niche applications like form-filling.
