Abstract:A comprehensive 14-week predeparture training program and an on-location orientation session are described. Increasing numbers of Western professionals go to foreign countries on assignment. Their success or failure in these assignments largely hinges upon their adaptation to the new set of living and working conditions. A well designed training program can enhance the chances for success and minimize failures. Such a program must be comprised of the following elements: language studies, documentary and practical information sessions, sensitivity training and field experiences. To address long-term concerns, on-site supportive services need to be organized.
