| Abstract: | Alliances and similar cooperative efforts are receiving increased attention in the strategic management literature. These relationships differ in significant ways from those governed by markets or hierarchies, and pose very different issues for researchers and managers. Alternative forms of governance in cases where multiple organizations repeatedly cooperate are discussed. Varying combinations of risk and reliance on trust are explored to show their roles for transacting parties while selecting among four nodal forms of governance: discrete, recurrent, relational contracting, or hierarchy. Many of the observations and propositions about the structure of relational bargaining transactions are presented in their scientific context. |
