Abstract:A critical look is taken at Doordashan, the Indian public service broadaster and it is suggested that it has been subject to political purposes. The author also claims that its bureaucracy has resulted in a failure to meet the needs of its audience and that a business elite has used broadcasting as a way of pursuing their interests. The present nationalist tv-programs are an outcome of balancing of competing pressures rather than a considered policy, says Rajagopal.
