Abstract:Health care reform in the United States is on a collision course with economic reality. Most proposals focus on measures that will produce one-time cost savings by eliminating waste and inefficiency. The question at the heart of the current debate is whether these savings will be large enough to pay for the added costs of universal coverage. But this is the wrong question to ask if reformers are serious about achieving a lasting cure for U.S. health care.
