Abstract:Consider the arrival of your company's CEO. How did the press react? What did stockholders and insiders expect? How was he or she received by the work force and executive team? Were the firm's expectations fulfilled? How long did the CEO stay at the top? Under what circumstances did she or he leave? Always a vulnerable time for organizations, executive transitions are characterized by anxiety, hopes, and uncertainty. Often these transitions take place under a shadow: the untimely - and sometimes traumatic - departure of the CEO. This article reviews several recent and prominent cases of this occurrence and examines the fallout that occurs when a CEO's leadership is terminated unexpectedly. It concludes with recommendations to bring the new executive on board succesfully and help the organization recover.
