Abstract:Between 1986 and 1988, human resources executives at the Loveland, Colorado division of Hewlett-Packard were forced to eliminate 400 jobs. In the process, they found a way to preserve their policy of avoiding layoffs. The overall theme for the company's work force balancing effort was to provide options to employees to make volutary choises to participate in such programs as regional redistribution, relocation, loan, reclassification and voluntary termination.
