Abstract:Protective capacity is a given amount of extra capacity at nonconstraints above the system constraint's capacity, used to protect against statistical fluctuations. This article presents the results of a computer simulation experiment which investigated the use of protective capacity to reduce cycle times and inventory holdings for a production line. The results provide evidence that the throughput of lines with protective capacity are less affected by disruptions such as downtime and processing time variability than lines without protective capacity.
