Abstract:It is time to revisit the familiar issue of buyer/supplier relationships. The Japanese model has now been well documented, particularly for leading edge automobile companies like Toyota, Nissan and Mazda. Essentially Japanese manufacturing companies do substantially less work inhouse than their USA or European counterparts. They use fewer suppliers, preferring to rely on one or two key primary suppliers for each outsourced subassembly. The only problem is according to the author, that this system, in many respects, has already passed and only flourished in the halcyon days of the late 1980's.
