Abstract:Goal setting is a motivational technique used to direct individuals' efforts at work and to provide a standard against which performance can be assessed. It is fundamental to many performance appraisal schemes, and frequently linked to reward systems. Goal difficulty and participation in the goal setting process were examined as they related to goal performance. Participants were scientists and professional staff, and their supervisors. The results have implications for practitioners and researchers and for goal setting theory.
