| Abstract: | Increasingly, multinational companies are conducting research and development (R&D) not only in their headquarters, but also in their subsidiary firms abroad. This has been interpreted by some as marking a trend towards a relocation of R&D potential abroad and as evidence that the domestic market of the parent company is becoming increasingly less attractive as a location for R&D. The analysis shows that the internationalization of R&D in multinational companies is contingent on the internationalization of their production, and is therefore not the consequence of a declining attractiveness of the home country as a research location. |
