Abstract:International alliances are increasingly central to corporate success, and their use is growing throughout the world. But they often fail. In many cases, the failure stems from the deal maker's concentration on strategic, financial, and legal complexities, while largely ignoring issues of "cultural compatibility" among the alliance partners. Once "the deal is done", the cultural dynamics of the alliance becomes a barrier to success. Consider Bridgestone's acquisition of Firestone. Or imagine the cultural complexity Sony and Matsushita faced as they sought to buy their way into the global entertainment and movie industry.
