Abstract:It is well known that interchange buffers help to decouple the stations in a line and reduce the adverse effect due to processing time variability and machine breakdowns. Larger buffer capacity increases the throughput of a line but also increases the work in process (WIP) in the line. The purpose of this research is to examine the possibility that increased buffer capacity can improve the throughput performance of a production line without increasing the WIP inventory in the system.
