Abstract:How do the Internet seach companies - Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek and Excite - will survive, after being the darlings of Wall Street. Now their stocks are troubled and their business plans are fallen apart. The search companies are generating paltry revenues and losing money. Internet advertising doesn't seem to work: showing results in the Web is difficult and search sites may not be very effective places for adds. Now the search companies have resorted to strategies far different from the ones they started with. They are recasting themselves as digital destinators, loading up their sites with content and software that will tempt visitor to read adds. The main problem is that investors have invested into four companies offering essentially the same product.
