Abstract:This article seeks to advance a view of accounting theorising as a social and institutional phenomenon and to investigate the conditions of possibility for divergence in research paradigms. The chosen perspective is that of doctoral programmes seen as the loci on which the foundations of disciplinary matrixes are established. The hypothesis postulated is that paradigms for accounting research can be conceptualized as social and institutional practices within which more or less precise notions of what is good research are constructed.
