Abstract:This study examines time-based competition using an analytical model that captures the effect of responsiveness on prices, customer demands, and firm profits. Firms compete to provide services or goods to cutomers in a make-to-order fashion. There are different types of customers that have distinct service requirements and sensitivities to the delay time from order to delivery. Companies are differentiated by cost and processing time distribution and compete through production, price and scheduling decisions. To study this competitive situation, tools and ideas form queueing theory and economics are used.
