Abstract:The inevitable decline of the US dollar as the world's leading international currency has been a recurrent theme of commentary on the international monetary system. This paper analyzes both the set of factors that have combined to establish the dollar as the leading international currency and recent developments relating to the international use of the dollar. The paper expands upon the concept of a currency region, developed by Cohen (1996a and 1996b), which he defines as a configuration of currency space in which the choice of currency that is used in cross border transactions is the result of market forces.
