Abstract:The transformation of a functional into a cellular layout causes average work in process levels to increase because of a loss in routeing flexibility resulting from the dedication of machines to part families. However, in practice cellular layouts provide benefits to counteract this loss in routeing flexibility. The authors use deterministic models to investigate the potential benefits of 4 characteristics of cellular layouts: operations overlapping, setup time reduction, reductions in move times, and the simultaneous setup of equipment in a cell.
