Abstract:In 1997, in the US alone, there were nine retail bank mergers over $1 billion, totalling $60 billion in value. In Europe, ING and Banque Bruxelles Lambert have agreed to merge as have Swiss Bank Corporation and Union Bank of Switzerland. There have been other major portfolio changes as well. A range of factors is driving the tidal wave of change. In the race to win in a rapidly changing and consolidating industry, the successful management teams will be those that have the capacity to access additional capital at short notice.
