Abstract:Prospects for EMU have focused interest on the issues involved in joining a long-lived fixed exchange rate system, which has involved discussion of a large number of issues, including the parity at which to enter the system, the role of market forces in determining the time of entry, and the advisability of announcing the final parities ahead of time. This study provides some historical perspectives which can be of value in understanding these issues. The study focuses upon two cases in which major countries returned to the fixed exchange rate gold standard at the original parities.
