Abstract: | This paper considers the linkages between culture and economic behavior by investigating the relationships among dimensions of culture that measure social values, socially preferred distributive principles, the structure of national sickness absence programs, and observed absence behavior. Where modesty, altruism, and quality of life are highly valued and all citizens have the social right to receive sickness benefits, the benefit financing costs borne by workers and employers are minimal, and high absence rates are observed. |
