Abstract:The growing wealth of post-industrial nations and their consumers suggests that people will have the means to acquire more goods and services. Studies have shown that U.S. consumers score relatively high on materialism measures. The research presented here compares possession satisfaction, a materialism measure, btw. the U.S. and France, and across and btw. generations in the tow countries. Overall materialism scores and individual item analysis indicate that possession satisfaction / materialism differs significantly by generation within each country and between nations.
