| Abstract: | When traditional systems of collectivised agriculture, planned industry and commerce, and the pursuit of self-reliance failed to produce satisfactory results, the Chinese government embarked upon a major program of economic reforms in the late 1970s. As a builder of physical facilities and a provider of work for surplus rural labourers, the Chinese construction industry plays an important role in the dual transformation of the country -- that is from an agricultural society to an industrial society. |
