Abstract:Sunk costs have long been recognized a key determinant as regards the size distribution of firms and, consequently, the market structure. According to the traditional "structuralist" view, market structure and the degree of concentration is determined by different entry barriers, such as R&D and marketing expenditures (Bain 1949, 1955; Lall 1980). More recently, the question of whether sunk costs are endogenously or exogenously determined has been addressed.
