Abstract:Political economy is the study of the economics of political institutions, especially government. As such, it tries to understand how political institutions allocate scarce resources and how they affect the way other institutions allocate resources. One hope is that conducting such a study will enable us to design better institutions. The dramatic growth in the academic analysis of political economy is due, in substantial part, to technical developments in economics and in game theory.
