Abstract:The subjects of the paper are wages in France and in Germany, labor costs and employment. The paper compares the wage development in France and Germany and provides economic background of both countries. The authors consider the assessment of their labor cost and volume of work and pay an attention to the margin of distribution available for wage increases and to the impact of wage restraint on employment. This study illustrates impressive success in terms of growth and employment for France compared with Germany. One element of this successful economic policy is a wage policy that utilized the margins of distributions in more strongly than in Germany, and acted as a remarkable incentive on investment and private consumption without leading to higher inflation.
