Abstract:The paper answers the question why has breakthrough innovation proved so difficult for companies to sustain. Certainly, no firm would question the need for product and process innovations to grow its businesses; most CEOs, in fact, would cite innovation as essential for their very survival. The author submits that CEOs and Boards of Directors have become the major impediment to sustaining innovation today. Although the author is sure that most CEOs see themselves as fearless corporate leaders, the author is convinced that in reality they lack the courage to embrace change or take a long-term view of their businesses.
