Abstract: | The objective of this article is to identify criteria that help management to decide whether self-organization or planned intervention is the more efficient approach for organizational change. The discussion of different theories of institutional development and - change shows that the following conditions ask for self-organization: formless institutions, wide-spread knowledge within the organization, multiple sources of power and the aim to change fundamental institutions that impact on the whole system. On the other hand do conflicting interests and a difficult assessable benefit speak for planned intervention. The paper provides a substantial list of references on this subject. |
