Abstract:Succession planning and leadership development ought to be two sides of the same coin. So why do many companies manage them as it they had nothing to do with each other? The article discusses research with findings that certain companies do succeed in developing deep and enduring bench strength by approaching succession planning. The research examined the leadership development at Eli Lilly, Bank of America and Dow Chemical. The fundamental rule is that succession management must be a flexible system.
