Abstract:Like the advent of the revolutions of 1989, the subsequent political quiescence of the post-socialist transitions in Central and Eastern Europe has presented a challenge for social scientists. Despite substantial economic hardship and contrary to prior expectations, these nascent democracies have been more peaceful tha Latin American countries in the 1980s in the terms of strikes, and they have even been comparable to stable Western democracies in the 1990s.
