Abstract:The rebound effect is a secondary effect, behavioral or systemic response to a measure taken to reduce environmental impacts. This article examines the rebound effect from an industrial ecology perspective and evaluates its significance for sustainable consumption. It is argued that the rebound effects should be called “ripple effects” instead, for the secondary effects of the measures can also be positive. It is concluded that behavioral and technological spill-over effects, transformational effects, and positive and negative side effects need to be further investigated for these effects have fallen outside economic equilibrium modeling.
