Abstract:For convenience and to save on fieldwork costs, many random samples involve an element of clustering. This article explains how clustering of a sample can have a detrimental effect on its statistical reliability, reducing effective sample size, and how precision can be improved more effectively by increasing the number of clusters rather than increasing the number of respondents per cluster.
