Abstract:This article examines market integration and expected returns in emerging markets. The authors find that the emerging stock markets have become less segmented in the past two decades and that the annual decrease in segmentation reduces the cost of capital and stock returns. Expected returns declined as a result of a decline in local segmentation and in regional segmentation.
