Abstract:Operations of organizations are globalizing and it is challenging to find enough resources and managers to man the operations all over the world. This is why the business managers are searching alternative ways to manage operations as the demand for the low number of global managers is perpetually increasing. One new organizational option is the concept of global virtual team (GVT). These complex teams can help multinational organizations extend their operations quickly without taxing global management skills. The article considers the competency theory as a basis and motivation element for the development of GVTs and examines how these teams work. Four different types of capitals (human, social, political and cross-cultural) are introduced in the article and their importance to the GVTs is discussed. The authors also demonstrate a process which helps to evaluate the GVT’s present stock of capital.
