Abstract:This study focuses on acquisitions (hereafter as: acqs.) of Internet firms (as: I-fs.) and the potential for the transfer of scarce resources. It is hypothesized that acqs. made by offline firms of I-fs. and by I-fs. of other I-fs. lead to positive market valuation for the acquirer. The predictions are supported by results of an event study of 798 acquisitions of I-fs. It is also found that prior alliances with online firms do not reduce the gains from such acquisitions to offline firms.
